Lawnmower Blades

By:  Melinda Sperl

Have you noticed that right after your lawn is mowed it looks great but then you look closer and notice that the tips of the grass are a little frayed?  Kind of like split ends in your hair.  After a couple of days the ends of each blade of grass will turn brown and ragged giving your lawn a brown tinge. This is a good indication that your lawnmower blade needs to be sharpened.

To sharpen the blade you first need to first make sure your lawnmower is off and then turn it over and remove the blade.  You can then either sharpen the blade yourself or take it to a repair shop to have them do it.  By removing the blade yourself you save yourself the struggle of transporting your lawnmower plus you may save some money by just bringing the blade in.  Some people even keep two blades so that they always have one sharpened blade on hand in the busy summer months.

If you have a company that mows for you, part of the service that you pay for is that they always have sharpened blades.  If you notice signs of dull blades, point it out to them or get a new company.
