Irrigation Water Savings By: Melinda Sperl In June we had record setting heat and little rain and now July and August are going to be as bad or worse. To keep plants alive some people have started over watering to try to keep their landscape alive. Did you know that about 80% of residential water use is for irrigation and 50% of that is wasted water? Because of low water tables and wasted water, some areas have enforced water rationing. Sometimes it takes a drought to wake us up or a huge water bill! I have added a list of irrigation saving tips that can make a huge difference in our water conservation. - Use only the amount of water that you absolutely need. There is no reason that you need to water every day, even in this heat.
- Water to at least 6 inches each time. Deep watering is much better for your yard and shrubs, especially your trees. Shallow watering encourages short root growth which dry out faster requiring more water. Wait for the area to dry before watering again allowing the roots to dry out. No plants like to be drowned.
- Water in the early morning as there is less wind and evaporation plus stronger water pressure. Also, plants are more prone to fungus if they overnight with water on the leaves.
- Turning your irrigation system down by one minute can save as much as 15 gallons per minute
- After you water, if you have water standing on your lawn, which is mosquito haven and means you wasted water. Turn your timer down.
