Tree Stakes

By:  Melinda Sperl

When planting a new tree it is sometimes necessary to stake it for stability.  This is especially necessary for top heavy trees and palms.  Staking keeps the tree growing straight and prevents winds from causing the tree to lean.  Usually staking consists of 2-3 posts that are attached to the tree by rope or rubber coated wire.  What you do not want to use is any thin wire or string that will cut into the tree.

It is very important to remove the stakes and attachments after one year.  After a year the tree can start growing around the rope and can cause permanent damage to the tree.  Even within this one year period it is a good idea to check the tree regularly to ensure that the tree is not getting damaged.

Palms are very short rooted plants and have heavy tops which may necessitate additional time before they can support themselves.  If this is the case, move the rope to another section of the tree until it can support itself.
