Drains

This time of year is when we are reminded about that drainage system we needed.  In the middle of the drought it was easy to put it off but with the rainy season here it may be time to take care of it.

Drain systems are needed in areas of the yard where water sits, soggy areas between houses, or when green algae shows on an outside wall that can be an indication of water inside the wall.  Mosquitoes are also heavier in yards needing drains.

Drain systems vary in type.  The most common is the catch basin type where drain “catch” basins are put in several low spots in the yard then drained out to the street.  If there is water entering the home, a traditional French drain system plus catch basin may be needed to divert all the water from the house.  Including gutter downspouts to the drain is necessary as the roofline is the heaviest point of water near the home.

A good drain system should last you many years baring construction and heavy roots.  Using quality products like solid PVC pipe and proper grading can make all the difference in your drain.  By hiring a drainage professional can the difference of your drain lasting 1 year or 20 years.
